- Proper RWD platform
- Proven chassis
- Above average power (even with the V6)
- Huge trunk
- Classy
- Street cred
- Police options
- Good MPG
- Ride quality
- Etc
I also have a feeling that since these cars have been the darlings of rental and law enforcement agencies, there's plenty of them out there so there's spare parts to spare for decades to come !
What do you you think, Oppo ?

not body on frame

Other than being not BOF, I'm inclined to agree. Though I wouldn't touch a 2.7 (and possibly a 3.5) with a 100ft pole. Now a 2011+ 3.6 on the other hand...
![]() 12/03/2014 at 18:57 |

But would you be inclined to touch an air-supension'd Panther with a pole of the same length ?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 18:59 |

Ew no. I despise them so....

Yes, that's a shame, but to be honest, the uni-body conspirators clearly won that war :-(
VHS won over BETA, despite BETA being superior.
To paraphrase Travis Okulski : " You win some, you lose some"
Food for thought.

Considering the amount of Town Cars I see with broken air ride, God no.

You are entitled to your own opinions, but can we know why are you thinking this way ?
It's easy to say "ewww, no" but it's more complicated to explain why.
I get that you don't like these cars, and it's fine with me, you can love your Prius, but please explain the beef you have with the LX cars.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:06 |

No, because Panthers are reliable.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:06 |

I frequently see Range Rovers with the same problem.

They should be. Esp. considering the least good, of the good ones, still make 345hp & the 425hp versions are getting down there in price too. Waaay more than the, aahh, 250hp the panthers make.

I plan on buying one off the local department one day. The local units have the V6, but goodness they look awesome. White door paint, racing stripes on the hood and trunk, and a giant bullbar.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:09 |

Can't disagree with that, but they've been out of production for a while.
I just asking if the LX cars are the Panthers successors, no need to get on your high horses.
Did I say anything against the Panthers ?
I love the Panthers, but their scheduled demise is worrying me at the point that I can't sleep at night.

You've literally driven the worst of the worst of the worst in terms of the LX platform. If that's all the experience I had I'd despise them too. But wait until you experience a 5.7 300c and you'll change your mind.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:10 |

That's frakin' baller ! go for it

Despise was probably the wrong word to use. I don't like how they drive, and while the interior is spacious everything seems too far away and the wheel is uncomfortable in my opinion. Theyre alright cars but they're just kinda meh in my opinion. Might be the one Ive driven thats ruined this platform but its not what I like.
Also the prius isn't mine, its my families. And i don't like it all.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:11 |

Hmmm.
Not quite as tough, because unibody. But that's the modern era for you.
V8 not standard, but same as above.
Other than that, I would say yeah, could be the next Panther.

Isn't that an easy fix of swapping out to springs? I know fixing the Lincoln MK VIIIs is as easy as swapping to MN12 Tbird/cougar springs.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:14 |

Like I said, no because Panthers are reliable and LX reliability is iffy. The newer ones aren't too bad but the early models were full of problems. The 2.7 is absolute sludge prone junk that was underpowered for such a large car. Automatic transmissions were also prone to failure and cop cars kept going through brakes.
There isn't really a successor to the Panther. It was the last car of its kind and now it's gone. I would say something like a Chevy Tahoe is a Panther successor even though it's an SUV. It's body on frame, V8, rear wheel drive and has similar driving characteristics.

Am I the only one who thinks the Chrysler 300 looks like a wannabe Rolls Royce?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:23 |

Of course the Panthers are more comfortable for us large folks, I agree with that, I feel a bit tight myself in the LX, but that's like the last of the Mohicans for us proper cars lovers.
We live in a world where road cars are fitted (FiSTed) with Recarro seats, and people think it's a good thing. Makes me want to vomit. Why would one want to be strapped in on of these to go to work ?
I don't understand.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:25 |

Liking a SUV disqualifies you as a Jalop.
Did you even read the manifesto of awesomeness ?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:25 |

What don't you understand?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:32 |

Part of the Panther's appeal to fleets was the time-tested nature of the design and its truck-like durability. I don't think the LX cars have proven themselves yet. As an example, my hometown police department has bought exactly one new Charger since the end of Crown Vic production, but they've bought 3 lightly used Crown Victorias from the federal government in the same time.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:33 |

Dont even mention the 2.7. *shudders* I have nightmares about that engine
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:35 |

Travis and the FP disagree with the Manifesto.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:36 |

Well, that's rude.
I'm just trying to have a civilized discussion with fellow car enthusiasts.
For the sake of explanation, I only said I didn't understand why people are happy to carve themselves into a Recarro seat just to go to work.
This is much better IMO:
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:37 |

That's sad.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:37 |

Now I just have to wait for these 2011 models to get old enough for them to sell and for me to get money!
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:38 |

There is nothing in the manifesto of awesomeness about liking SUV. Also, where in my post does it say that I like SUVs?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:38 |

I wish I could say the same about my local Police department.
You live in a good place, never move out of there.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:40 |

Someone get this boy a 5.7 300c!
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:40 |

" like a Chevy Tahoe"
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:43 |

I did move out, but my dad's the chief back home. He's always been pretty tight with the budget - buy two slightly used cars for less than one new one and run them for 120,000 miles. Their mechanic is kind of nervous about the Charger's prospects, but they had to start branching out sooner or later.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:44 |

Whoa, I was just asking what you didn't understand. I didn't know if you meant the Recaros or the about the Prius.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:44 |

What are you a cop?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:45 |

Sadly, there's no manual...
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:47 |

Who cares in a large sedan with a lazy V8 about a manual?!
![]() 12/03/2014 at 19:48 |

But I want to do burnouts. ..

All you gotta do is stomp your right foot! Then lightly apply the brakes.

Sorry I'm a bit over-sensitive right now, for personal reasons.
I'm truly sorry, I didn't want to start a kerfuffle.

That, or a Bentley (#9).

*the early 2.7 is absolute sludge prone junk
The ones in the LX cars were later versions that had the issues worked out. It was supposedly addressed in 2003-ish. Underpowerd, probably (never driven a 2.7 LX)
Edit: no more underpowered than a Panther though

Don't forget Bluray over HDDVD... HDDVD was soooooo much better. Minus the capacity, but really... A finalized standard unlike the Java nightmare that BR is still

This sums it up:
![]() 12/03/2014 at 21:58 |

nah. Panthers are still the best Panthers

My 3.5 powered Magnum has given me no problems so far, and it has 186,000 miles on it. Still runs like the day I got it with 10k. Very solid platform. The only parts that have failed from a mechanical perspective are the front outer tie rods and front lower control arms, which had to be replaced at 175k. Would have loved getting the Hemi, but this is my wife's car and she didn't need it.
![]() 12/04/2014 at 14:43 |

Then I'm not a Jalop either so I'm out!
